If you’re uneasy around heights, you’re not alone. In a poll conducted by Chapman University, researchers found that being afraid of heights is the second most common fear among Americans (the first is public speaking). The good news is that a fear of heights doesn’t preclude you from going ziplining at CLIMB Works Keana Farms!
Each year, we host hundreds of guests who are anxious about heights. Although they may start off nervous, once our guests experience their first zipline, a rush of adrenaline completely wipes away their fear. You can read numerous reviews on our TripAdvisor page from visitors who overcame their nerves at CLIMB Works.
Of course, those with a clinically significant case of acrophobia (i.e. someone who may have a panic attack on an escalator or a ladder) should probably skip our course. But if you have a normal fear of heights, we would love to have you! To help you prepare for your adventure at CLIMB Works, we have put together five tips for conquering your fear of heights when you zipline on Oahu.
1. Read Up on Our Safety Measures
A great way to put your mind at ease before ziplining is reading up on our safety practices. Our course receives rigorous and regular inspections and exceeds the standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology and the American National Standards Institute. Furthermore, CLIMB Works uses a patented automatic braking system, so guests don’t have to worry about slowing themselves down. For more information, check out our in-depth article about how we keep guests safe.
2. Get Encouragement from Our Guides
If you are feeling nervous during your zipline adventure, don’t hesitate to talk to one of your guides! Our experienced team members have helped countless guests overcome their fear of heights with words of encouragement, humor, and plenty of positivity. In fact, overcoming challenges is a key part of the CLIMB Works philosophy. “CLIMB” is an acronym for Challenge/ Learn / Inspire / Master / Believe, and all of our team members are strong believers in this life-changing ideology.
3. Ride Next to a Friend or Significant Other
When you zipline on Oahu, you won’t be flying solo! All eight of the ziplines at CLIMB Works can be enjoyed by two riders at the same time. This unique dual line design means that anxious guests can face their fears with their significant other or best friend at their side. It’s incredible how much having your partner or a pal with you can boost your confidence.
4. Remember to Breathe
If you find yourself getting anxious during your zipline tour, simply breathing can do wonders to help you calm down. According to psychiatrists at New York Medical College and Columbia University, the following breathing technique has been scientifically proven to help people reach a better state of mind:
Breathe in gently through your nose for six seconds. Then gently exhale through your nose for six seconds. Continue this pattern for a few minutes or until you feel more relaxed.
5. Visualize Yourself Ziplining
Visualizing can be a powerful tool for helping people conquer their fears. Before you visit CLIMB Works, take a moment to imagine what it’s like to soar through the sky on one of our ziplines. Try to conjure up as realistic an image as possible in your mind’s eye. This mental preparation will help you feel ready when your real-life zipline tour begins.
