If you’ve never been ziplining before (or even if you have), it’s completely normal to be a little nervous when you visit CLIMB Works Keana Farms. We’re the first to admit that soaring over the treetops at 30 miles per hour is a little outside most people’s comfort zone! However, when it comes to safety, there is absolutely nothing you need to worry about at our zipline course.

CLIMB Works Keana Farms is an industry leader in zipline safety. Our course exceeds the standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology and the American National Standards Institute. Read on for a detailed look at how CLIMB Works keeps you safe during your Oahu zipline adventure.

No Hand-BrakingA happy couple taking an Oahu zipline adventure.

At many zipline courses across America, guests are responsible for slowing themselves down before they reach the end of a line. The most popular technique for this is “hand-braking,” in which a zipliner wears leather gloves and grabs onto the cable to reduce their speed. Although it is commonplace, hand-braking can lead to a number of safety issues. For example, overly excited riders sometimes forget braking instructions and fail to slow down at the right time. On the other hand, a nervous rider might brake too early and find themselves stuck in the middle of a line. Hand-braking can also lead to friction burns and other injuries if exposed skin comes into contact with the zipline equipment.

Here at CLIMB Works, we have avoided all of the problems associated with hand-braking by creating our very own state-of-the-art automatic braking system: ZIPKEA. Our patented technology is called a Kinetic Energy Absorber (KEA) because it harnesses the energy produced by a zipline rider and reuses it to bring the participant to an appropriate landing speed. ZIPKEA also features a built-in retrieval system that brings in riders who stop short of the landing platform. Our trained guides operate ZIPKEA, as well as a backup braking device, so rather than worrying about braking at the right moment, our guests can just relax and enjoy their Oahu zipline adventure!

Each morning, our staff inspects our zipline course to make sure that everything is running in tip-top shape. CLIMB Works Keana Farms also receives comprehensive annual and bi-annual inspections from a team of visiting zipline experts. As an extra safety measure, the course at Keana Farms was built with a handful of small tension triggers that are virtually unnoticeable but indicate a potential problem when activated. These triggers allow us to catch and fix any issues before they occur.
